Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant Augmentation

Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade

Project summary

A major upgrade to the Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant is being undertaken to cater for the increasing volume of sewage being generated in the Cooroy and Pomona catchment and to meet increased treatment and environmental discharge standards.
The improved, environmentally-friendly sewage treatment plant will be constructed beside the existing facility and will ensure treatment of sewage to high environmental standards, significantly reducing the community’s impact on the environment.

This is part of Unitywater’s commitment to provide a quality, reliable sewage treatment service to the Sunshine Coast community.

Construction commenced in November 2011 and it is expected that the new plant will be operational by the end of 2012.

Project background

The existing Cooroy STP has been in service for 40 years and was upgraded in 1973, 1989 and 1996.

A detailed planning report undertaken in 2009 by engineering firm GHD confirmed the need to upgrade the STP to cater for anticipated population growth in the surrounding area and to improve treatment standards.

The upgraded Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant will cater for future urban development in the following catchment areas:

• Cooroy
• Pomona
• Eumundi (in the future)

Project details

The upgrade of the Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant commenced at the end of November 2011, following Unitywater’s Board and Capital Works committee awarding the construction contract.

Upgrading the Cooroy STP will allow residents based in specific areas of the Sunshine Coast access to the reticulated town sewerage system.  Once the STP upgrade is complete in December 2012, all Pomona residents with access to the reticulated town sewerage system will be invited to connect.

Cost savings from bundling this project with the Woodford STP upgrade project will provide a saving in excess of $0.6 million.

    Saving Tips
  • Bathroom Tip #2

Use a bucket to catch water while the shower warms up. You can then reuse this water on your garden. If it takes 30 seconds for your shower to warm up, you could collect up to 10 litres of water for your garden.
