Maleny Sewage Treatment Plant

Maleny Sewerage Treatment Plant

Project summary

The $15 million upgrade to the Maleny Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) will ensure the sewerage treatment system will meet the current and future needs of our Maleny customers.

As part of the upgrade, Unitywater will be developing a reforestation and wetland area within the Maleny Community Precinct.  Treated water from the Maleny Sewerage Treatment Plant will be naturalised as it trickles through the reforestation and wetland system.

Project Background

The existing Maleny STP has been in operation since 1982 and treats an average of 400,000 litres of sewage per day in dry conditions.  To prevent environmental harm to the Obi Obi Creek, most of the treated effluent from the plant is irrigated to a pasture block near the plant.

A review of current projections indicates that the STP needs to be upgraded to cater for anticipated population growth in the catchment area.

On 23 June 2011, Unitywater’s Board endorsed upgrading the treatment plant and developing of a forest irrigation area and wetland system within the Maleny Community Precinct.

Since then Unitywater has been working with Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) on the design of this project. As part of this work Unitywater has also engaged with the local community groups to ensure the irrigated forest and wetland system is in keeping with the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan.

Project Details

The Development Application (DA) for the upgrade has been submitted to Sunshine Coast Regional Council for review and approval.

Unitywater will hold a community information session for members of the community to see the plans in detail and ask questions of the project team.
