Project summary
Maroochydore Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) comprises two independent plants, Plant A and Plant B, which have a nominal treatment capacity of approximately 135,000 equivalent population (EP).
The treatment plant recently underwent a major upgrade in 2007, however, elements of the bio-solids handling system require renewal and augmentation to treat existing loads and forecast growth.

Background
The upgrade to Maroochydore Sewage Treatment Plant was identified as a result of Unitywater considering its overall network and treatment plant assets, in particular, options for an upgrade to the Suncoast Sewage Treatment Plant located on Finland Road, Bli Bli, west of the Sunshine Motorway.
Maroochydore Sewage Treatment Plant serves the communities of Pacific Paradise, Marcoola, Mudjimba, Twin Waters, Bli Bli, Kunda Park, Kuluin, Maroochydore, Forest Glen, Buderim, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba.
Proposed diversion of some network flows from Maroochydore Sewage Treatment Plant to Kawana Sewage Treatment Plant will create spare treatment capacity at Maroochydore. It is proposed to utilise this spare capacity by transferring flows from Suncoast Sewage Treatment Plant to Maroochydore Sewage Treatment Plant by construction of a new pumping station and pipeline, following which Suncoast Sewage Treatment Plant will be decommissioned. Implementing these works will reduce the number of Unitywater’s sewage treatment plants with no adverse environmental impact, but will achieve significant operational cost savings.
Details
The proposed upgrade works at Maroochydore STP involves the upgrade and augmentation of the following process plant:
Secondary Clarifiers
- Installation of Energy Dissipating Inlets (EDI’s) on the existing Clarifiers
- Modifications to the Plant B Flow Splitter to overcome hydraulic surging of the Plant B clarifiers
WAS Thickening
- 1 x new Gravity Drainage Deck (GDD) to provide redundancy to existing WAS thickening system (~ 30L/s at 3,740mg/L loading)
Digester Heating
- New Digester Heating system (300kW Boiler and Heat Exchanger ) to heat digesters to required temperature (38oC) in both winter and summer
Sludge Dewatering
- Provision of a new (shelf standby) centrifuge to provide redundancy to the existing sludge dewatering
UV Disinfection
- Upgrade both the Plant A and Plant B UV disinfection system to achieve disinfection at UV Transmissivity (UVT) ~ 42% (due to poor UVT of Suncoast load, ~ 15% UVT)
