Unitywater is planning a major upgrade to the Nambour Sewage Treatment Plant.
This treatment plant serves the catchments of Nambour, Woombye, Palmwoods, Yandina and Eumundi and is located to the east of Nambour beside the Bruce Highway and Petrie Creek.
The existing plant, which was last upgraded in 1998, is operating beyond its design capacity and requires an upgrade to cater for anticipated population growth in these catchments.
Unitywater is currently investigating options to increase the capacity of the Nambour Sewerage Treatment Plant to approximately 10 million litres/day to meet anticipated growth in the region.
By increasing the standard of treatment provided it will reduce the quantity of nutrients discharged to the lower reaches of the Maroochy river and result in a healthier river for the community.

A construction partner is yet to be determined.
The Nambour Sewage Treatment Plant was last upgraded in 1998 with a minor upgrade to the control system in 2006.
This sewage treatment plant currently treats an Average Dry Weather Flow (ADWF) of 6.7 million litres/day. Effluent from the plant is transferred by pipeline to Maroochydore where it is combined with effluent from the Maroochydore STP, and discharged into the lower reaches of the Maroochy River estuary.
Unitywater is reviewing options for the upgrade of the treatment plant to determine the most cost effective, environmentally beneficial solution.
The project procurement strategy is design and construction with early contractor involvement. Three shortlisted contractors (Abigroup, CH2M HILL/Downer Joint Venture, and Tenix) have been selected to advise project details before providing their tender submissions for the design and construction of Nambour STP upgrade. Selection of the preferred tender submission is anticipated in the latter part of 2012 and design of the upgraded facilities will commence after engagement of the main contractor.
