Project Background
Due to increasing population in the Moreton Bay region, the Brendale Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) has been placed under increasing strain and is nearing capacity.
To reduce the strain on the facility, Unitywater will divert waste generated in Ferny Hills and Arana Hills from Brendale to Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) treatment facilities at Luggage Point for approximately five years.
Unitywater has an agreement with QUU to redirect sewerage flow from pump station 260, located at the north end of Francis Street, Arana Hills to treatment facilities at Luggage Point.
The diversion eliminates the need for the construction of extensive, high cost infrastructure to take sewage from a pump station at Arana Hills, through the Bunyaville State Forest Park and adjoining urban areas, to Unitywater’s Brendale Sewage Treatment Plant at Cribb Road, Brendale.
The decreased load on the Brendale Sewage Treatment Plant also helps maintain water quality in the South Pine River, which is an environmentally-sensitive watercourse because it does not flow year-round.
Project Details
Construction of the new sewerage infrastructure commenced in April 2011 and was completed in December 2011 with live connection to be done in late February 2012.,
The project involves the following key elements:
• installation of a rising main in the road reserve of Francis Road
• installation of a gravity main from Bunya Road south to South Pine Road where it connects to Dawson Parade, through Hobbs Street to connect onto Olearia Street West.
The alignment of the project has been designed to avoid interference with existing services, as well as to accommodate for future growth in the area. The sewer mains will be installed under the road reserve to lessen the impact on the roadway and local traffic.
Construction techniques included a combination of directional drilling, open trenching and micro-tunnelling. Micro-tunnelling was carried out along highly residential areas to lessen the impact on residents.
