Project summary
Unitywater is conducting ongoing testing of its water network to continue to deliver a safe and reliable water supply, reduce water losses and defer expensive network upgrades.
The ongoing maintenance program involves testing the network’s ability to perform on demand in case of a fire and checking for leaks in the network.
This will promote peace of mind that the local community’s water supply needs, even in times of a fire, are continuing to be met - especially important as we enter the dry, high fire danger period throughout South-East Queensland.

Benefits
|
Regularly maintaining our water network by testing for leaks and confirming pressure levels across the network delivers a range of benefits:
- saves money and the environment by minimising the water wasted through undetectable leaks;
- helps prevent burst mains, which means fewer interruptions to supply for our customers and less water loss;
- helps defer the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades, and
- tests the network’s ability to perform on demand in case of a fire.

Project Background & Details
Regularly maintaining our water network by testing for leaks and confirming pressure levels across the network saves money and the environment by minimising the water wasted through undetectable leaks.
Testing and maintaining our water network delivers other benefits such as helping prevent burst mains, which means fewer interruptions to supply for our customers and less water loss.
Overall, this ongoing program helps defer the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades, while ensuring the network’s ability to perform on demand in case of a fire.
The maintenance will involve Unitywater crews inspecting the valves in the water network during the day.
Interruptions to water supply are not anticipated as part of this ongoing program, and residents will be notified in writing prior to any testing in their street.
Through this program, Unitywater will continue to deliver a high quality, safe and reliable water supply at the required pressure to meet our customer’s household and business needs.
This is part of Unitywater’s ongoing maintenance program, investing in the water and sewerage networks for our 235,000 customers in the Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast regions.

Locating surface noise for leak detection: Our teams use a ground microphone to help identify surface noise to accurately identify a location for an excavation.

When a sound is identified using a the acoustic listening sticks, a correlation is carried out to pinpoint the location of the leak causing the noise. This is done using sensors which listen for constant noise on the network and filter out sporadic noise such as usage.

Detection of missing assets: Assets are sometimes buried under tarmac, vegetation or paving. During maintenance works we try and locate these missing assets, using metal detectors.
