Pre-treatment

Most commercial and service industries will require some form of pre-treatment before the waste is allowed to enter the sewerage system.

Pre-treatment facilities must have successfully completed the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) product appraisal process for trade waste pre-treatment facilities.

If you have already completed another product appraisal process, please contact Unitywater for consideration of your existing approval:

Email community@unitywater.com or call 1300 0 UNITY (1300 086 489) for the cost of a local call from a landline anywhere in Australia.  Standard mobile phone call charges apply. .

Details

Commercial food outlets

Food generating businesses are usually required to install and maintain a grease arrestor of at least 1000 litres as a condition of a Trade Waste Discharge Permit.

The Trade Waste Advisor that manages your permit application will assess whether your business needs a grease arrestor and calculate the size required. For details:Trade Waste Grease Arrestor Size Guidelines (PDF)

Automotive service businesses

Automotive and engineering industries are usually required to install and maintain oil and solids/ water separators of at least 1,000 litres per hour capacity.

Oil and grit arrestors (triple interceptor traps) are only approved to pre-treat trade waste from areas where no mechanical repairs washing or degreasing of motors is undertaken.

Each permit application will be assessed on the nature of oily waste to be treated, proposed treatment method and site location.

Shopping centres

Garbage storage and bin washing areas need to have an oil and grit arrestor of a size between 550 to 1000 litres. The area must be ringed by a gutter in the ground or bunded. If the area is over one square meter, it needs a roof that overhangs the drain/bund by at least 900mm or a stormwater diversion system.

Medical premises

Opticians, dentists, medical and veterinary surgeries may need one or all of the following: bottle trap, plaster arrestor and/ or silver recovery unit (for x-rays).

Schools

Schools with science laboratories may need a grease arrestor, neutralising trap or dilution tanks. Tuckshops that produce hot food will likely require a grease arrestor.

Laundromats

Laundromats need to install 1mm mesh lint screens. If temperatures are greater than 38°C a cooling pit is required.

Find out more about trade waste pre-treatment facilities installation requirements via a Trade Waste Pre-treatment Facilities Installation Requirements fact sheet (PDF).

The cleaning frequency of these pre-treatment facilities are able to be changed by submitting a change in Trade Waste Discharge Permit form.
