How to calculate water usage charges
Calculating water usage charges over two financial years
When the water usage period on your account falls over two financial years, your average daily water usage:
- up to 30 June is charged at the previous financial year’s prices; and
- from 1 July is charged at the current financial year’s prices.
The following steps show you how to calculate water usage charges over two financial years for the sample Unitywater Account below:
Please note: Tiers and prices vary by region. 1 kilolitre (kL) = 1000 litres (L).
Sample Unitywater Account (Page 2)
Step 1 – count the number of days of water usage in each financial year:
a. Count the number of days from the day after your Previous Read Date (see Step 1a) up to and including 30 June 2011:
13/04/2011 to 30/06/2011 = 79 days
b. Count the number of days from 1 July 2011 up to and including your Current Read Date (see Step 1b) :
1/07/2011 to 30/01/2012 = 214 days
(79 + 214 = 293, which is the total No. of Days of water usage we are charging you for on this account)
Step 2 - calculate your Average Daily Usage:
Average Daily Usage (L) = Usage (kL) ÷ No. of Days (see above - Step 2)
= 89 ÷ 293
= 0.3037542 kL (x 1000 for litres)
= 304 L
Step 3 – calculate your Usage (kL) in each financial year:
a. 13/04/2011 to 30/06/2011 = no. of days up to 30 June x Average Daily Usage (kL)
= 79 x 0.3037542 kL
= 24.00 kL
b. 1/07/2011 to 30/01/2012 = no. of days from 1 July x Average Daily Usage (kL)
= 214 x 0.3037542 kL
= 65.00 kL
Step 4 – calculate your State Govt Bulk Water Charge for each financial year:
State Govt Bulk Water Charge 13/04/2011 to 30/06/2011 = Usage (kL) up to 30 June x 2010-2011 bulk water price
= 24.00 kL x $1.070
= $25.68
State Govt Bulk Water Charge 1/07/2011 to 30/01/2012 = Usage (kL) from 1 July x 2011-2012 bulk water price
= 65.00 kL x $1.340
= $87.10
Step 5 – calculate your Unitywater Water Usage Charges for each financial year:
Tier 1: 13/04/2011 to 03/06/2011 = Usage (kL) up to 30 June x 2010-2011 Tier 1 price
= 24.00 kL x $0.520
= $12.48
Tier 1: 1/07/2011 tot 30/01/2012 = Usage (kL) from 1 July x 2011-2012 Tier 1 price
= 65.00 kL x $0.538
= $34.97
Step 6 – calculate your TOTAL Water Usage Charges:
Total Water Usage Charges = State Govt Bulk Water Charges + Unitywater Water Usage Charges
= $25.68 + $87.10 + $12.48 + $34.97
= $160.23
