Oyster reef restoration: a trial as a sustainable nutrient offset

Did you know we can use old oyster shells discarded by the hospitality industry to form new oyster beds that help improve the health of waterways?

We are partnering with a diverse team to deliver an oyster/shellfish reef restoration project in the upper estuarine reaches of the Pine River, at sites immediately downstream of our Murrumba Downs sewage treatment plant. The trial will establish shellfish reefs, using robust oyster baskets, and will provide information on whether they can be used as a sustainable nutrient offset method. Nutrient offsets are a key element to achieve our net zero goals.

The trial has been designed in collaboration with Traditional Owners and project partners including OzFish, University of Sunshine Coast and Healthy Land and Water.

Yandina Creek Wetlands - another project to reach zero nutrients

Next time you are up this way, visit our 1.7km trail walk and bird viewing hide at Yandina Creek Wetland - it is a bird watcher's paradise!

In 2016, we purchased two lots of former cane farming land along the Maroochy River and have since restored the area into a wetland. This wetland removes nutrients and sediments from the river, improving water quality and overall river health.

We offset the amount of nutrients removed by these wetlands against the nutrients discharged to the Maroochy River following treatment of the sewage at our local sewage treatment plant.

It is now home to critically endangered and protected wildlife, and was a low-cost alternative to treatment plant upgrades.

Wamuran Irrigation Scheme: year-round security for our local farmers

As the population increases in our Moreton Bay region, additional loads are put on our sewage treatment plants with higher effluent volumes following treatment.

As part of our commitment to long-term sustainable water supply in our region, we are building the Wamuran Irrigation Scheme which will divert Class A recycled water from the Caboolture South Sewage Treatment Plant to farms. This will allow our farmers greater certainty for crop planting and enable them to expand their operations.

The farmers will be supplied with Class A standard water, and will not have to solely rely on their own dams or local creeks to irrigate their crops, and the Scheme helps us meet our 2050 sustainability goals of zero nutrients diverted or offset from waterways.

Suppliers and procurement

Capital works

We are developing long-term collaborative partnerships with industry (civil, structural, process, mechanical and electrical) to deliver our capital works program through our new Build Better Together delivery model. Our capital works program typically includes infrastructure projects such as Sewage Treatment Plans, networks for sewage collection, water distribution and reticulation.

In this new way of working, we'll work with suppliers to deliver critical infrastructure needed for our emerging communities and essential 24/7 water and sewerage services.

We have recently shortlisted industry partners to progress to the Request for Tender stage of the program's procurement, and expect contracts to be awarded mid - late 2023. The deadline for these opportunities has passed.
