Unitywater is encouraging residents to turn off their ‘stop tap’ – the device on their water meter that controls the flow of water to their private plumbing – before they ‘hop away’ this Easter.

Unitywater Executive Manager Customer Delivery, Rhett Duncan, said turning off the stop tap was a simple and effective way to prevent expensive leaks when no one is home.

“Even a small leak can use large volumes of water over time and add up on your bill,” Mr Duncan said.

“One of the simplest things you can do is turn off the stop tap so you know leaks can’t occur while you’re away.”

Mr Duncan said stop taps could be turned off by turning the tap or lever clockwise until it can’t be turned anymore.

“All it takes is a turn of a tap on your meter – it may take a few turns but shouldn’t need excessive force.”
