Unitywater Executive Manager Strategic Engagement, Joshua Zugajev, said the program turned essential infrastructure into works of art across Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa.
“Our community art program invites local professional and emerging artists and community groups, to transform our infrastructure into vibrant public art that enhances local spaces,” Mr Zugajev said.
“Inspired by the environment, culture and heritage of communities, each piece reflects and enhances the local landscape, celebrating the stories that make our region unique,” he said.
The new artworks include a roadside cabinet and odour control unit in Tewantin, which has been transformed by artist Sarah Bartel into an artistic duo recognising some of the smaller species local to Noosa, including Strawflowers, bees and small insects.
“I hope the new and improved exterior of the Tewantin assets would bring greater appreciation to local art within the community,” Ms Bartel said.
“Unitywater’s art program allows local artists to create beautiful artwork, turning infrastructure that would usually be ignored into something the community can admire,” she said.
Additionally, a simple pump station on Lake Weyba Drive in Noosaville has been converted by local artist, Louise Bastos, from Solshine Arts, into a mural representing native flora in the area.
“My design options for the pump station were inspired by native Australian flora and my desire to share my connection to nature with others,” Ms Bastos said.
The final wattle design was elected in a community vote, with 88% of participants choosing the shades of green and yellow wattle as a popular representation of Noosa’s local environment,” she said.
“Having lived on the Sunshine Coast for over a decade, Noosa’s lush greenery has become a familiar favourite of many within the community, including myself.
I’m so proud I was able to bring some colour and culture to Unitywater’s pump station.”
“I had lovely people coming here, stopping, asking me questions, and connecting with what I was doing. It was just a beautiful process.”
Three additional artworks will be painted on Unitywater assets throughout Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast in the coming weeks.
