Young netball teams compete in the day-long event for one of three trophies: Lightning (Championship), Storm (Boys), and Thunder (for new or developing players).
Sunshine Coast Lightning wing attack, Leesa Mi Mi, who received the club’s 2025 Community Champion Award, said the Unitywater Lightning Cup was a fantastic way to support grassroots netball and inspire the next generation of players.
“Registrations fill up fast, so we encourage schools to get their teams signed up early. Whether you’re aiming for a trophy or simply want to see your students on the courts practicing teamwork and having a go, it’s a day everyone can enjoy,” Ms Mi Mi said.
Good Samaritan Catholic College took home the Championship trophy last year, something the school’s Sports Coordinator, Alisha Venables, said was exciting for the team and celebrated by the school.
“Our year five and six students love the chance to spend a day outdoors playing their best, supporting each other and embracing teamwork on the courts” Ms Venables said.
“What makes the Unitywater Lightning Cup even more special is allowing the boys teams to get involved in the competition as well – they love having their own division to compete in and it really brings out a sense of school spirit.”
Unitywater Acting Executive Manager Strategic Engagement, Melissa Bowerman, said the utility looked forward to working closely with Sunshine Coast Lightning again this year.
“Unitywater is here for healthy and thriving communities and we are thrilled to be partnering with the Sunshine Coast Lightning and supporting this great school community event for the fifth consecutive year,” Ms Bowerman said.
“Our Drink Tap van will be at the Unitywater Lightning Cup, and at Sunshine Coast Lightning home games this season, providing fresh and healthy tap water. We encourage visitors to bring their reusable water bottles, fill up for free and avoid single-use plastics,” she said.
The event will also host multi-class ‘come-and-try’ opportunities for students with different physical, cognitive or intellectual abilities to get involved.
The Unitywater Lightning Cup will be held on Friday 21 August at the Fisherman’s Road Sports Complex in Maroochydore and features food trucks, activities, merchandise and Sunshine Coast Lightning player appearances throughout the day.
