Please read this information and take action

Your digital water meter has recorded a continuous flow of water on your property, which usually indicates a water leak.

This could result in the loss of thousands of litres of water each day and a big increase in your next water bill if not fixed quickly.

What you need to do next

Check for leaks in your plumbing fittings, fixtures or appliances, including: 

  • toilets
  • taps
  • shower heads
  • hot water systems 
  • plumbed-in appliances e.g. water filters

Also ensure the following are working correctly, and are not on automatic top or continuous use:

  • irrigation systems
  • automatic top-up devices for tanks and swimming pools
  • timers for taps, hoses and sprinklers

How to check if your toilet is leaking:

Place a sheet of dry toilet paper at the back of the toilet bowl, above the water line. If the toilet cistern is leaking, water will trickle down the back of the bowl and wet the paper. If the paper stays dry, there's no leak.

If you haven't found any visible leaks or problems, you probably have a hidden leak in pipes that are underground or within the walls. These leaks often go undetected, causing much higher water bills.

STEP 1. Turn off all taps and appliances including the washing machine, dishwasher and any irrigation at your property (do not turn off the stop tap on your water meter.). 

STEP 2. Go to your water meter box and find the meter reading number, take a photo of it or write it down. Here's how you find the meter reading number:

If you have a digital water meter logger, the meter reading number is displayed on the existing mechanical meter, which sits under the logger.

 If you have an integrated digital water meter, the meter reading number is on the digital display on the integrated meter.

STEP 3. Wait one hour – do not to use any water, don't even flush the toilet – then take another meter reading. If the number has changed, you probably have a concealed leak.

Property owners are responsible for finding and fixing leaks on their property and paying the repair costs and extra water usage charges caused by leaks. We always recommend that you contact a licensed plumber or leak detection company to locate and repair any leaks promptly. 

Once your leak is fixed by a licensed plumber, do another leak test to check it's fixed (step 2 above).
