Construction update

After almost 18 months of construction, majority of construction was completed at the end of 2025, with commissioning and final testing taking place in early 2026.

This project is on budget, on schedule, boasts strong safety results and exceptional community engagement outcomes.

Completion of this complex infrastructure project would not have been possible without the support of the residents and community where we worked.

Unitywater and our principal contractor, Killard Tallai Joint Venture (KTJV) would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents and local community for their patience and understanding throughout the construction phase of this project.

Project update

Project overview

The Waraba Wastewater Network is set to provide essential wastewater services to approximately 70,000 people who are expected to call the new City of Waraba (formerly West Caboolture) home over the next 40 years.

The project includes construction of a state-of-the-art wastewater pumping station and more than 4.5 kilometres of pipeline to connect the pumping station to Unitywater’s existing network.

What sets this project apart from others is its holistic approach, combining cutting-edge engineering with deep community engagement and environmental care. From advanced trenchless construction to relocating wildlife and supporting locals during extreme weather - it’s not just about infrastructure - it’s about building trust, resilience, and sustainability for a growing, liveable region.

Project snapshot

In March 2021, the Queensland Government announced the Neighbourhood Development Plan area No. 1 (NDP1) as the first development area within Waraba (formerly known as Caboolture West) to manage growth in the rapidly growing corridor north of Brisbane.

NDP1 is approximately 266 hectares in area and is bounded by the Caboolture River to the north and west, Caboolture River Road to the south and existing suburban residential areas to the east. It will support a new urban community with a range of housing options with walkable neighbourhoods, local parks, a shopping district, sporting fields and new schools.

To support the development of NDP1, Unitywater and Killard Tallai Joint Venture will deliver the Waraba Wastewater Network project, which includes:

  • A new wastewater pumping station located within the development area west of Crabapple Court.
  • Approximately 4.5 kilometres of new wastewater pipeline. The underground pipeline extends from the pumping station west of Crabapple Court, east through existing developed areas to a location on Walkers Road. The pipeline alignment minimises environmental and residential disruption, while meeting essential project outcomes. View the project map.

Working with industry
Unitywater is working alongside six private development companies to deliver the other required water and wastewater infrastructure to support development of NDP1.

The connecting water and wastewater infrastructure unlocks the delivery of not only these homes in NDP1, but also underpins the ultimate network that will service approximately 20,000 homes in the wider Waraba area.

The wastewater from all the new homes that will be built in the new Waraba developments – flushing toilets, shower drains, washing machines, and water from the kitchen sink – will be safely transported to a wastewater treatment plant for cleaning and disinfection before being returned to the environment. Reliable wastewater networks are essential to maintaining public health and protecting our natural environment. Read more about what happens after you flush.

Unitywater participated in a rigorous planning process, which included engaging with Traditional Owners, various environmental groups, the Queensland Government and the City of Moreton Bay.

The final pipeline alignment minimises environmental impacts as much as possible and avoids conflicts with other critical regional water and power infrastructure in the area.

To ensure the successful delivery of the Waraba Wastewater Network, Unitywater and its delivery partner, KTJV, will work closely with stakeholders, businesses, nearby residents and Unitywater customers along the proposed alignment to keep everyone informed and updated of the work being undertaken.

Construction commenced in May 2024 and is expected to be completed by late 2025, weather and construction conditions permitting.
